An extaordanary ultra fun run happens every year at Oakura School. It's a fun day full of awesome activites that will get you up and active. The day is all about raising money for our year seven and eight classes. Every student is put into a team run by two year 7 leaders. There's a cool, funky theme for every team and we are encourging everybody to dress up as there are prizes for best dressed girl, boy and team. This year the fun run is being run on the 5th of December at 12:30. From there on in, you're guaranteed to have a fabulous time working together in your team. There are water activites, running activites, puzzles and many more awesome games.
As we said before, there are a ton of exciting themes for each team. Some include: clowns, pjs, tropical, athletes and fluro. Here are some of the year eights thoughts on the activites they have chosen for the fun run: Kate - drift wood boats "We chose it because it's different. Noone's done it before and kids enjoy making things. Eleanor- Egg obstacle course: "We got the idea from last year and changed it into more of an obstacle course so it will be more competitive and kids will enjoy it more."
We hope that this year absolutely everybody will immensly enjoy the fun run and that it's better than ever before. So come on Oakura school dress up, get wet, have fun. Then at the end of the day you lucky children can have a tasty lemonade iceblock to cool you down and give you a sugar rush after your long fun day in the sun at school.

A Day in the Life of A Working Parent
How would you like to be a CEO of a company for a week? Or work in a bank or a warehouse? Or develop a unique product? Well, that's just what the Oakura Year 7 and 8s are doing this term. The Oakura school Year 7 and 8s are appling for jobs in the the school's 2nd annual PrEP week (Primary Enterprise Programme). This happens every 2 years and is a programme focused on showing Year 7 and 8 children what happens in a working adult's everyday life. In addition, the kids will make some real money that will be donated to our chosen charity.
There are 4 job positions avalible for the children to choose from that they have to apply for in a letter to the PrEP government (The Teachers). These jobs include the Warehouse Staff who are responsible for stocking the warehouse with goods needed for the companies. They price the goods and sell them to the businesses and keep records of what is bought. Bank staff help businesses and employees to deposit and withdraw money, keep accurate records, and learn how to give good service to customers. Managers help organise the company, allocate jobs, and get to help design and make the product. Finally, workers develop and design the product following their plans carefully and learn to work with others.
In about five weeks, a market day will be held for the rest of the school. Food, toys, ornaments and many other things that have been completely developed and designed by hand will be for sale. There also will be raffles. We hope you will help our community by supporting the Year 7 and 8 PrEP program on Market Day the 12th of November!

The AIM of the Game!!
Have you ever heard of the AIMs Games? It's the biggest international sporting championships in New Zealand. This week Oakura school for the first time participated in the 10th year of the AIMs intermediate school games. Eight students from Oakura School participated in the event in Tauranaga. We were in 3 sports: cross country, golf and tennis. The students that competed were: Jason, Tasmin, Max, Poppy, Emily, Charlie, Lachie and Skyler.
"The race was huge and it was an amazing race to do. I would love to do it again next year," said Lachie. The games are on all this week and many of the students are competing in Tauranga now and having the time of thier lives. The competition is extremely difficult and our cross country runners found it hard to even get in to the top 50. "The race was really hard, but also extremely rewarding by just finishing it, " said Tasmin. She added, "I would have loved to do it again, but sadly I can't because I am a Year 8."
I hope that all of the year 7's will participate in the AIMs Games next year as year 8's. I had a great time and enjoyed every second of it.

How to Dispose of your Electronics Safely!!
Going digital is coming on the 29th of September and we have to say goodbye to our old T.V.s.
How do we dispose of these? Do you think we chuck them in the bin and let the garbage truck take care of them? Or do we use... E-WASTE! (Eletronic waste)
What is e-waste most of you ask? Well e-waste is something where you can get rid of your T.V. safely by bringing it to your local recycling centre. There they will take your electronics apart safely. Please don't do this at home because there is stuff in the T.V. that can give an electric shock that can kill you and chemical that can affect you.
E- waste is the fastest growing waste stream around the world. All electronic products from electric toothbrushes to fridges can be taken to an e-waste dump.
Our local e-waste dump is on 37 Corbett Road, Bell Block. The company name is Whitaker Civil Engineering. They are open at 8am to noon on Tuesdays to Saturdays.
YOU CAN DO YOUR BIT TO HELP OUR ENVIROMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speeches Arrive at Oakura School!
The time has finally come to write and deliver a speech! Room 10 and 11 at Oakura School are getting ready to impress their classrooms! We have have been preparing by watching videos, and even had a guest speaker, Nigel, come and give us some advice on how to deliver a great speech.
When Nigel spoke to us he gave us lots of great tips. He said: be a part of your audience and believe in your topic. We brought back lots of information to guide us through speech making. He also talked about choosing the right topic for the right audience. The students have come up with some fun topics to entertain, to inform or to persuade us. We had to think about what our audience would enjoy and something that interests them.
We asked some of the students what they thought about speeches and whether they liked them or not. Most of the students informed us that they enjoyed the process of speech making. Some people liked them, and definately wanted to go through to the school finals. Others just enjoy getting time off homework to complete writing their speech. Some of the speech topics people have come up with are extrodanairy! Some of the topics people wanted to write about were: the top 10 ways to annoy your teacher, what it would be like to be famous and how to make a dog laugh.
Speeches are a great opportunity to become more confident in front of an audience. Everyone is putting their best effort in to write an incredible speech and deliver it with confidence. Good luck to everyone writing speeches!

Enormous effort, but mixed results
On the 20th of August 2013, St Joseph's Hawera came to Oakura School to compete in the 3rd round of the Taranaki interschool sport competition.
Football
"It was a good game, both teams played great!" said student coach Jason. After the whistle blew, St Joseph's scored a quick goal and went 1-0 up on Oakura. Roughly 15 minutes after that, Oakura came back to score 1 of their own to break even. Just before half time St Joseph's scored another goal to bring it to 2-1 at half time. Oakura brought on their subs and scored in the first couple of minutes. The rest of the game was very fast-paced and ended in a 4-4 draw. Gavin was awarded player of the day because he played amazing defence and did heaps of running.
Rugby
After a tough first half, Oakura came back with 4 brillant runaway trys and nice conversions. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to win the game. "I think the game went well and it was a good fare game and all the rugbt boys played very hard even though we were getting wasted the boy's pulled back in the second half to make the final 73-23 to them. A shout out to Matthew (chocalate bar) for commiting to everything," said Oscar (wiz).
Next week's games are on Wednesday the 28th of August against St Joseph's Stratford. Come out and support your children or your mates!

88% of Cars Speed Through Oakura Village.
New Plymouth District Council placed speed counters on South Road in the center of the village and discovered that 39,680 cars were going over the speed limit throughout a ten day period. This is right outside Oakura School where kids are crossing the road daily. Our year seven and eight classes are writing to the New Zealand Transport Agency to convince them to change the 70 kph zone at the entrance of the village and the road to our school to a 50 kph zone. This will hopefully slow cars down so they are not going at massive speeds in a school zone.
Cars are increasing their speed to get up a hill even though they should be slowing down. The fastest speed recorded by the NPDC was 141 kph! One third of the students attending Oakura school walk along this road and have to cross it to get to school -- increasing the potential for accidents or even death. There are also 60 new sections to be built up the road which will increase the population and the number of cars using this section of the road.
We are also requesting that NZTA put flashing lights on the pedestrian crossing. This will make it safer for the community to cross either at night time or in bad weather. Did you know forty six percent of night-time fatalities happen on low visibility crossings?
Oakura is growing as a community and something needs to be done before something bad happens! If you feel strongly about this you could write a letter to the NZTA as well.
Thanks for your support!

Geocamp video footage
What an exciting two weeks for these young geologists. Take a look at what they have been up to.Geocamp video
Geocamp
For the last two weeks Jason, Gavin, Ben, Rebecca, Tasmin and Lachie have been going to the Power of the Planet Geocamp. At the Geocamp they have been learning about geology. They spent the last few days creating expos for a display in Puke Ariki on its 10th birthday. They have had a great time and all say they really enjoyed it and recommend it to any year 7&8s next year. Some of them kept blogs during the Geocamp so we've decided to add some links.
